Leader of Slovakian Hungarian Alliance Reflects on Presidential Election

Hungary Today 2024.03.25.

The first round of presidential elections in Slovakia took place last weekend, with Krisztián Forró, the candidate of the Hungarian Alliance, achieving 2.9% of the votes, as reported by ma7 news site.

In an interview for the website, the presidential hopeful explained that the anticipated 4% share of votes for the Hungarian candidate was diminished to less than 3%, as a significant proportion of eligible voters (80%) opted for candidates deemed more likely to win.

With such a high degree of polarization, it becomes increasingly challenging for candidates considered unlikely to win,”

remarked Krisztián Forró.

Regarding the low voter turnout in predominantly Hungarian districts of southern Slovakia, Mr. Forró pointed to variations in participation levels across municipalities as an example.

Reflecting on the impact of the weaker than expected results, the Hungarian Alliance’s candidate emphasized the need to mobilize Hungarian voters, anticipating that the prevailing polarization in Slovak politics would persist into the June elections. Despite this,

Mr. Forró expressed confidence in his party’s prospects of regaining representation in the European Parliament (EP).

Regarding support for second-round candidates, he disclosed that in line with a decision made during a board meeting on Saturday night, the Hungarian Alliance would first initiate negotiations with the leading presidential candidate of the governing party, Peter Pellegrini.

Although Forró offered to resign as party leader, it was decided that no changes would be made within the party until after the EP elections.
