Language courses to facilitate effective communication between the Hungarian and Ukrainian-speaking population will be launched in Transcarpathia (Western Ukraine) with the support of the State Secretariat for National Policy, announced Lőrinc Nacsa, State Secretary for National Policy on Tuesday.

In a video message sent to the participants of the Kölcsey Summer Pedagogical Academy at the II. Ferenc Rákóczi Hungarian College in Transcarpathia, the State Secretary said:

Transcarpathia is a multi-ethnic region of Ukraine, where different ethnicities have lived side by side in peace and understanding for centuries. Knowing each other’s language and, through language, each other’s culture and way of thinking greatly helps tolerance and cooperation between nations.”

He highlighted: “With all this in mind, the State Secretariat for National Policy, in cooperation with the II. Rákóczi Ferenc Transcarpathian Hungarian College, has decided to launch a new program, the aim of which is to support and facilitate the coexistence of languages and cultures in an inclusive manner.”

Lőrinc Nacsa explained: applicants for the course can participate in Hungarian as a foreign language and Ukrainian as a foreign language training. A total of 72 teachers are involved in the implementation of the program. Hungarian as a foreign language will be taught in 50 settlements and Ukrainian as a foreign language in 7 settlements between August 2025 and July 30, 2026.

The Secretary of State highlighted: “We are pleased that the training of the course instructors has already begun today at the college, with the involvement of renowned experts, and the training will begin in September. He emphasized:

The language course not only serves to promote understanding between different ethnicities, but in the current difficult war economic situation, we provide jobs for more than 70 instructors and help them remain in their homeland.”

The curriculum developed for the training by the instructors of the II. Rákóczi Ferenc Transcarpathian Hungarian College is practice-oriented and prepares the participants for everyday life situations. Language barrier-relief courses are also particularly useful for those working in the public sector – such as teachers, healthcare workers and public administration staff – as they help them to more effectively establish contact with clients, students or patients with different language backgrounds.
