Russia does not pose a threat to states from which it is not threatened, and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s fears are unfounded, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Wednesday.

“We are far from agreeing with Mr. Orbán on everything,

Russia does not pose any threat – contrary to what is now being repeated with enviable persistence in the European Union – to any state that is not hostile to Russia,

that is not trying to become a counter-Russia, so the fears about this are groundless,” Dmitry Peskov said, commenting on the Hungarian Prime Minister’s statement that Hungary does not want a common border with Russia. The spokesman stressed that Russia is trying to provide security “for itself and its children.”

Following Tuesday’s V4 summit, Prime Minister Orbán said that there is one special factor for Hungary, namely that Hungary does not want a common border with Russia again, because it has had bad experiences with this in the past. “From Hungary’s point of view, there is a special aspect, as Hungary does not want to have a common border with Russia. As for this period, we have bad memories of it,” Orbán stressed at the event, referring to the time of the Soviet Union.

“One of the most important principles of Hungarian national security is that there should be an entity to the East of us that is located between Russia and Hungary. We are therefore also helping Ukraine because of Hungarian national interests,” the Prime Minister pointed out on Tuesday.
