Katalin Novák Supports Serbia’s EU Accession at the Berlin Process

MTI-Hungary Today 2023.10.17.

We need Serbia and the Western Balkan countries in the European Union, President of Hungary Katalin Novák said in Tirana, Albania, after talks with Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabić. The President arrived in Albania on Monday for the Berlin Process Summit.

Katalin Novák stressed that Serbia and Hungary are strong strategic partners and that it is in our interest to have Serbia join the EU. Hungary can play an important role in the accession process, as we know the region and the culture well, she added.

Hungary supports Serbia’s accession to the EU, as Serbia is an integral part of the European Union and its values are European values, which no one can question.

The EU has already made many mistakes in connection with the accession of other countries, she stressed. She added that we are all facing the challenge of mass migration to Europe and we want to protect our borders. That is why Serbia’s accession to the EU is of the utmost importance.

The president said that Serbia’s respect for the rights of national minorities was exemplary. In this context, she mentioned that on Saturday, she had attended a consecration of bishops of the Reformed Christian Church in a Hungarian minority settlement in Vojvodina, Serbia. Here, the Serbian government was represented by the Serbian Deputy Prime Minister. She said that it was another example of how

national minority groups in the neighboring country had flourished and could contribute to the development of the country.

Fact

This year, Tirana hosts the Berlin Process Summit for cooperation and EU integration in the Western Balkans. The Berlin Process was established in 2014, as a platform for high-level cooperation between senior officials from the Western Balkan Six (WB6), consisting of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, Northern Macedonia, and Serbia, and representatives of the countries hosting the Berlin Process.

President Novák said that Monday was an important day, because Hungary can finally express its position on the EU’s enlargement to the Western Balkans at the highest level in the Berlin Process. Hungary and the EU also need the Western Balkans and stability in the region, because

without the stability of the Western Balkans there can be no secure Europe, including Hungary.

The president noted that she had come to the summit at the invitation of Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama to say that Hungary would do its utmost to join the Western Balkans as soon as possible and that it would speed up the process when Hungary holds the EU Presidency.
