July 2024 is the Hottest One Since 154 Years

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.08.15.

In July 2024, Hungary experienced its hottest and seventh driest July in 154 years, according to HungaroMet’s recent study. This analysis compared current temperature and rainfall extremes to historical data, revealing that July 2024 was the most extreme 7th month of the year.

The study highlights that this year’s mean temperature of 24.53°C made it the warmest July ever recorded, surpassing the coldest July, which was in 1913 with a mean temperature of 17.26°C. The 1913 cold spell was attributed to the cooling effects of the Novarupta-Katmai volcanic eruption in 1912. In terms of precipitation, July of 1952 was the driest, with only 13.83 mm of rain, while July 2024 saw 22.23 mm. The most humid July was in 1878 with 173.71 mm.

The analysis noted that 2024 July extremes were driven by exceptionally high temperatures and low rainfall.

It also identified July of 1984 as the second most extreme, marked by a very cold average temperature of 18.51°C and 31.51 mm of precipitation. The study underscored how extreme weather can manifest in multiple dimensions.

Comparing with August of 1992, the study found that while August was warmer, July conditions were more extreme in terms of both heat and dryness. Additionally, 1965 October was highlighted as the most unusual month in 154 years for its extreme dryness and cool temperatures. The study concluded that the first seven months of 2024 were notably warmer and drier than historical averages, with temperatures 2.92°C above the 1991-2020 average and over 4.4°C above the 1871-1900 average.
