In Štúrovo (Párkány), three, and in Nové Zámky (Érsekújvár), two classes in Hungarian will be opened in schools located in South-Slovakia. Both elementary schools are satisfied with the number of enrolled students.
The Ady Endre Elementary School in Štúrovo will open three first-grade classes this school year, despite the declining birth rate – reported Principal Péter Bacsó. “Last year, we were able to launch four classes; this year, based on the number of children, we can open three, and we are completely satisfied with that,” the principal stated. The enrollment data is currently being processed. The final types of classes will be determined based on parental preferences.
The plan is to offer traditional, sports-oriented, and full-day school-home classes this year as well.
The latter option is aimed at parents who, due to their work schedules, cannot be as involved in their children’s daily study preparation. The school lends a helping hand, as children in these classes do not take homework home on weekdays – study preparation mainly falls on weekends. The school’s catchment area is broad, with about half of the students commuting from surrounding villages.
The number of enrolled students this year is 72, although a few cases of deferrals are still under consideration.
Enrollment was also successful this year at the Czuczor Gergely Elementary School in Nové Zámky. According to Principal Zoltán Prikin, the school is satisfied with the results – this year, 50 children were enrolled in the institution’s first grade.
The school prepared for enrollment consciously and proactively. Starting in October, they organized numerous programs for future first-graders and their parents – including joint play sessions, discussions, and presentations. These events aimed to foster familiarity and build trust. The series of events concluded with a family afternoon, organized in cooperation with the Rákóczi Association. The school maintains regular contact with local kindergartens and actively participates in parent-teacher meetings, which also contributed to the successful enrollment.
It has been a long-standing practice to conduct enrollment via an online platform, allowing parents to complete administrative tasks from the comfort of their homes. This enables teachers to focus entirely on assessing children’s skills during in-person meetings.
Although the final number may still change – deferrals are expected in 7–8 cases – the school plans to open two first-grade classes. Of the enrolled students, about 30–35 are from Nové Zámky, with the rest coming from surrounding towns. The school expresses its gratitude for the trust of the parents and promises to do everything possible to honor that trust.
