Italian Garbage Mafia’s Alleged Accomplice Busted in Hungary

Hungary Today 2023.02.20.

A Hungarian truck driver was recently busted in Hungary for allegedly taking rubbish in his lorry from Campania in Italy to an incinerator in Romania. However, as a cheaper solution, he wanted to bury it on his farm in Hungary. Fortunately the police intervened in time, reported Hungarian tabloid Blikk.

The 46-year-old truck driver was caught by officers from Taszár in Somogy County. It turned out that he is reportedly working for the Italian mafia, and not alone, as several other drivers were also caught by police in early February.

According to Blikk, the Hungarian trucker in question had allegedly been paid by an Italian client to transport large quantities of household waste, and the driver had planned to bury the rubbish on his own abandoned farm in Hungary.

According to the information, the driver had probably picked up the money from the Italian company (which is EU-funded) and the original intention was to take the waste to an incinerator in Romania. However, the driver thought that he could save on both the petrol and the incinerator fees and instead bury the rubbish himself. If he had succeeded in his plan, he could have made a profit of up to €1,000.

The drivers were caught when police checked three trucks from Italy carrying more than 70 tons of baled mixed household waste. The rubbish included used diapers, plastic, spoiled food, and household chemical residues. A case was opened against the 46-year-old man at the Kaposvár Police Station, and the costs of repacking and returning the load had to be paid by the arrested driver.

Lieutenant Colonel István Orosz, a retired policeman, told Blikk that

in Italy, garbage collection is a big business, and municipalities typically hire the mafia’s front companies to do it, through bribery or extortion.

He added that Italian criminal groups in the US have also got their hands in the business. He noted that in Naples a few years ago, municipalities wanted to hire companies independent of the mafia to take out the rubbish, but for months no one dared to touch the waste, leaving the streets stinking. Finally the mafia won and the rubbish disappeared immediately.
