Investments Worth Billions Announced in Tourist Favorite Szentendre

Hungary Today 2024.02.21.

The foundation of the new SPAR supermarket was laid on Tuesday at the HÉV (Budapest Railway of Local Interest) terminus in Szentendre (near Budapest), reports Világgazdaság. The modern store and underground garage, as well as the beautification of its surroundings, will cost the company around HUF 3.6 billion (EUR 9.3 million) as part of a greenfield investment.

Gabriella Heiszler, President and CEO of SPAR Hungary, said at the ground-breaking ceremony that their company will continue its strategic expansion this year, building new, modern, and environmentally friendly stores. One of the major developments in 2024 will start in Szentendre, a town in the Budapest agglomeration famous for its cultural and tourist attractions, where construction of the new SPAR supermarket and the renewal of its surroundings will begin at an important transport hub.

The supermarket, part of the Szentendre municipality’s long-term urban regeneration development concept, is scheduled to open its doors to customers in the first quarter of next year.

“Our newest store will offer both local residents and the passing public a convenient shopping experience in a sophisticated environment, with modern equipment and experienced staff,” Gabriella Heiszler pointed out.

The event was also attended by Eszter Vitályos, Member of Parliament and Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Culture and Innovation, who noted that an important step in the renewal of the Szentendre HÉV terminus and its surroundings is the development of the H5 Szentendre HÉV line, in line with the government’s transport infrastructure development, and the construction of the SPAR supermarket and its surroundings. She said that

this investment brings more than HUF 10 billion (EUR 25.7 million) of the total amount of money that has been invested in Szentendre in recent years,

and it is a matter of pride that over HUF 8 billion (EUR 20.6 million) of this was government support.

In the course of the development

  • a more than 4,000 square meter building will be completed
  • 2,200 of the 4,000 square meters will be the underground car park
  • the ground-floor supermarket will have a floor area of over 2,000 square meters.

The modern store will employ a total of 42 sales professionals. The project will also affect the area around the new shop, where the existing public car park will be renewed and extended. In addition, a promenade will be built in the direction of the station of the HÉV, green areas will be renewed, and a park will be created.
