International Films Made with Artificial Intelligence to Be Awarded in Budapest

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.02.27.

For the first time in Hungary, an international competition for films made with artificial intelligence will be held, and the winning films of The AI Film Festival (AIFF) will be screened on Sunday at Bem Cinema, Budapest.

The 145 entries from almost 30 countries were selected by a prestigious jury and will be screened at Bem Cinema. Participation in the screening and the awards ceremony is free of charge, but registration is required, say the organizers. The AIFF was open to entries in five categories – visual, documentary, experimental, video clip, and mixed art – with a maximum of 15 minutes, at least half of which must be made with artificial intelligence.

Ervin Sallai, founder and chief organizer of The AI Film Festival, says that the rise of artificial intelligence has highlighted the need to adopt a new approach to the content produced with its help.

Hungary has always been a pioneer in the film industry, so it is no coincidence that we came up with the idea of creating a new type of AI-focused film festival,”

he notes.

The entries are very diverse: from a funky Australian video clip of strange furry creatures to a thought-provoking French environmental film, to poetic or even funny Hungarian experimental works, there is a wide range of styles and visual cultures to choose from.

During the selection process, a jury of students from the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME) and the Budapest Metropolitan University (METU), advertising experts, and members of the Bujtor István Cinema Club watched more than seven hours of competition films. The shortlisted short films were selected by the founders of the Hungarian AI community and film and design professionals. The professional jury included Oscar-winning film director Kristóf Deák, animation director Katalin Glaser, Ágnes Bakk, Head of the MOME Immersion and Interaction Hub, and Attila Pártfalusi, Head of the Media Design BA at MOME.

After the awards ceremony, the organizers are inviting the public to a film discussion at the Manyi – Cultural Workshop with director Kristóf Deák, commercial and video clip director Miki357, director Balázs Juszt, actor Simon Szabó, and commercial copywriter Falcao (LavaLava).

More information about the festival is available at The AI Film Festival’s webpage. You can register for the festival screening sessions and the awards ceremony on cooltix.hu. The language of the film screenings is English.
