International diplomacy has been reinvigorated since the peace mission, Minister of Foreign Affairs Péter Szijjártó stated on his Facebook page. The politician noted that more and more people are finally talking to each other, which is good news because the path to peace lies through negotiations.
In recent days, the Chinese and the US foreign ministers have held talks at a meeting of Southeast Asian countries, and Russia’s foreign minister has also engaged in discussions with his South Korean counterpart. Mr. Szijjártó commented that it would be beneficial for Europeans to notice this trend, although he observed that “understanding is slower to come.”
He also accused Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski of “sticking to provocation,” noting that he could get used to this, especially since they sit side by side in the EU Foreign Affairs Council. The Hungarian Foreign Minister went on to say that
Minister Sikorski “crossed another line and lied” by claiming that Minister Szijjártó had enthusiastically supported his “nonsense proposal” to hold the next informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Ukraine.
Péter Szijjártó clarified that immediately after Mr. Sikorski’s proposal he expressed his opposition, making it clear that the meeting should not be held in Ukraine. He emphasized, “we will continue to work on restoring the long-term security of our oil supply,” mentioning that he had another phone call with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar on Monday morning.
The Hungarian Foreign Minister reiterated his firm stance that Ukraine acts against the Association Agreement with the EU “when it threatens the security of our energy supply.” He also highlighted that possible legal and technical solutions to “ensure the continuity of our oil supply regardless of the Ukrainian transit ban” are being continuously analyzed.
