International Conference to Address the Social Impact of Technological Development

MTI-Hungary Today 2025.05.29.

The Mathias Corvinus Collegium (MCC) is organizing an international conference in Budapest between June 3 and 5 entitled “Budapest Summit on Technology and Society.” This year’s event will focus on the social impact of rapidly accelerating technological development.

The international conference will address the social impact of technological development, including the possibilities for effective regulation of Big Tech, the human-centered integration of technological developments into education, the rise of artificial intelligence and its impact on human creativity, as well as the impact of digital transformation on mental health. The invited foreign and Hungarian speakers will approach the topic from various perspectives.

Speakers will include Timandra Harkness, technology journalist, host of BBC Radio 4‘s FutureProofing, editor of BBC documentaries on technology, author of two books, and contributor to well-known publications such as The Telegraph, The Guardian, The Sunday Times and Men’s Health.

Timandra Harkness collaborated with neuroscientist Helen Pilcher to create the first science comedy in the United Kingdom, and has since written and performed numerous science and math comedies to sold-out audiences.

The discussions will feature Catherine L’Ecuyer, a Canadian researcher and educational expert based in Madrid, whose new approach to learning theory was first presented in one of the most prestigious international journals on neuroscience. Catherine L’Ecuye has publications about Montessori pedagogy, neuromyths, and the effects of technology on children.

Ellie Lee, a professor at the University of Kent, examines the reasons why parents need to rethink their role in raising children and the impact this has on family life. One of the research focuses of the Center for Parenting Culture Studies (CPCS), which she founded, is the development of risk awareness. According to the institute’s research thesis, excessive fears about aspects of childhood now define the parental role as a kind of risk management role.

One of the participants in the panel discussion “Algorithms and Ideologies: The Politicization of Artificial Intelligence” will be Sam Kahn, editor of the non-profit digital magazine and community forum Persuasion, who has worked as a producer for media companies such as Netflix, Showtime, Paramount+. Another guest speaker will be Jash Dholani, an Indian-born writer and speaker who has gained a following of over 100,000 followers on Twitter/X with his account the ‘Old Books Guy.’ On his profile, he shares his thoughts on old books, dissident thinkers, and essential historical lessons.

Research psychologist Leonardo Orlando takes a complex approach to examining the biological and evolutionary aspects of political behavior. The speaker holds a PhD in political science and international relations, a degree in philosophy, and a postdoctoral degree in cognitive science and evolutionary psychology.

A panel discussion at the conference, with the participation of Leonardo Orlando, will examine the mental health, cognitive development, and emotional intelligence development of young people from a complex perspective.

After the event in Budapest, the international conference will continue on June 5, at the MCC’s regional centers in Békéscsaba, Debrecen, Eger, Győr, Kaposvár, Miskolc, Pécs, Szeged, Székesfehérvár, Szekszárd, Szombathely, Veszprém, and Kolozsvár, where professional presentations, panel discussions, and public meetings await those interested, with the participation of Hungarian and foreign speakers, reads the announcement.
