In a debate, Socialist politician István Hiller urged the government to be more moderate when it comes to major investments. Culture Minister János Csák says support for culture is guaranteed. He also stressed the importance of innovation.

Hungary’s future depends on whether we can shake up innovation, and we must be able to apply Hungarian ingenuity to innovation and the economy, said János Csák, Minister for Culture and Innovation, in a debate with former Culture Minister István Hiller (MSZP) at the Transit Public Life Season Opening and Thought Expo political conference in Tihany, by Lake Balaton on Saturday.

“What we need now is a revolution of quality,” he said, adding that all museum and library directors, archivists should work on utilizing the immense value at their hands.

IHiller stressed that “we must pay close attention to the public culture of rural Hungary: the gallery of the small town, the library.” This should be the time of preservation, and major cultural investments should be postponed, because the construction of these would be to the detriment of smaller institutions, the politician said.

The Minister agreed: as long as he is minister, there will be no unnecessary prestige investments. He said he had received a guarantee from the Prime Minister that there would be no cuts in culture.
