The peak production of industrial solar power plants has been broken again. The total production of solar systems above 50 kilowatts (kW) reached 3,225 megawatts between 1:00 p.m. and 1:15 p.m. on July 27, surpassing the previous peak of 3,204 megawatts recorded on June 24, the Ministry of Energy writes on Facebook.

Based on the latest data from electric utility company MAVIR, a total of 6,712 megawatts of solar power plants have been installed in Hungary by July 2024. Industrial installations account for the largest share of the total capacity with 3,678 megawatts,

meaning that nearly 90 percent of systems above 50 kW were actually operating during the peak quarter-hour,

the ministry said.

They added that, based on the time-phased progress, domestic solar capacity is expected to grow at an outstanding rate of over 1 gigawatt this year, similar to the last two years, compared to other countries. According to the Hungarian Energy and Utilities Regulatory Authority (MEKH), the installed capacity of solar panels increased from 2 MW in 2010 to 4,235 MW in 2022.

Following the rapid growth in recent years, Hungary reached the 6 gigawatts previously targeted for 2030 six years earlier, by spring 2024.

The National Energy and Climate Plan under review therefore foresees a doubling of installed capacity to 12 gigawatts by the beginning of the next decade,

MEKH said.

They noted that Hungary wants to be at the forefront of green energy production and storage in homes, factories and vehicles. It is an important achievement that in 2023 Hungary had the third highest share of solar energy in electricity generation in the world and the second highest in Europe, the authority pointed out.

The government is already running programs to encourage the increased and more efficient use of green energy with HUF 230 billion (EUR 580 million).

The Solar Energy Plus Program, for instance, is a major driver for further solar capacity growth. Thanks to this program, a large number of subsidized developments could be completed in the second half of 2024. The program will be able to cover two thirds of the investment costs of more than 25,000 families due to the increase in the budget.

Fact

Private households can receive non-refundable support for the generation and storage of solar power from January 15, 2024. The Solar Energy Plus Program, with a budget of HUF 75 billion (EUR 195,3 million), gives private individuals with privately owned residential properties the opportunity to to use non-refundable support for renewable energy sources.
