Lidl Hungary sold 14.2 billion forints (38 million euros) worth of Hungarian wine in Hungary and abroad, with sales up by almost 60 percent in five years, the supermarket chain told MTI on Thursday.

Export sales have reached 15 million bottles, with furmint, királyleányka, and szürkebarát (pinot gris) are the most popular Hungarian wines abroad. The offer is wide-ranging, with products from family wineries and large wineries alike being marketed. Lidl currently sells more than 200 types of Hungarian wine in 16 European countries, they said.

The supermarket chain decided almost a decade ago to give priority to bottled wines as part of its program for Hungarian suppliers and help producers sell abroad. The initiative is seen as a success, with Hungarian wines maintaining their competitiveness despite market difficulties, according to the statement. They highlighted that two of Lidl’s own-brand wines won gold medals at this year’s Berliner Wein Trophy international wine competition.
