Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó spoke in Rome on Wednesday, as reported by the Italian Foreign Ministry. He addressed the portrayal of Ilaria Salis, who was detained in Hungary, as a victim and martyr by some individuals.

He emphasized that this depiction is far from reality, given that Ms. Salis and her accomplices orchestrated a planned assault that left innocent people on the brink of death in the streets. Expressing his dismay at the reactions to her detention, Minister Szijjártó refuted the narrative of her being a victim or martyr.

Szijjártó clarified that Ms. Salis arrived in Hungary as a member of a radical, extremist organization, with a clear intent to capture and brutally assault defenseless individuals in the streets.

Highlighting the premeditated nature of the crime, the minister stressed that the violence was not spontaneous but rather a meticulously planned act. He underscored the severity of the situation, noting that individuals were nearly killed.

Mr. Szijjártó also pointed out the hypocrisy of how the Italian media portrayed the incident, focusing solely on Ilaria Salis while neglecting to show the victims’ faces.

He reiterated the gravity of Ms. Salis’ involvement in a planned assault that resulted in severe harm, and emphasized the need for appropriate punishment. Lastly, he expressed astonishment at Italy’s attempt to interfere in Hungary’s judicial process. He contrasted this interference with past accusations of Hungary’s judiciary independence violations, emphasizing the importance of allowing the court to administer justice impartially.
