ICE Cars Still King of the Road, but EVs Are Catching Up

Hungary Today 2025.06.06.

On the Hungarian used car market, gasoline and diesel are still the most popular, but electric vehicles are already making their mark. Interest in electric and hybrid vehicles is significantly higher than last year’s levels, meanwhile, gasoline and diesel cars are still more popular overall, reported VG.hu.
Compared to May last year, the secondhand car website Használtautó.hu received 53.3% more inquiries about electric cars in the past month, while interest in hybrids increased by 16.1%, according to their latest summary. Year-on-year growth was 3.9 percent for gasoline cars and 0.6 percent for diesel cars.
Compared to last year, the used car market has seen significant growth, especially in the area of alternative powertrains, added Márk Koralewsky, business manager at Használtautó.hu. He pointed out that interest in electric cars is up 53.3 percent, while hybrid powertrains are up 16.1 percent. Average prices have also increased compared to the same period last year, he added. Interestingly, electric cars are bucking the trend of rising average prices, with data showing a 6.3 percent decrease in their prices.

The average age of cars available on the market remained at 13-14 years for traditional powertrains and around four to five years for hybrid and electric cars. In terms of design, hatchbacks are unbeatable, leading the way with 132,000 searches. Urban SUVs, in second place, were searched for by almost half as many people, with exactly 68,600 searches. Station wagons are in third place on the list with 61,900 searches. The domestic electric car market grew enormously last year.

The passenger car market showed significant growth in Hungary in 2024: 121,607 passenger cars were registered in the country, 13 percent more than in the previous year, the Hungarian Vehicle Importers Association (MGE) reported. They noted that there has been extraordinary growth in the field of electric cars, with 47.8 percent more electric cars registered in Hungary than in 2023, thanks in part to renewed government subsidies and the growing selection of electric models.
