Surge in Electric Vehicle Registrations Puts us Among European Top-Tier

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.08.30.

Hungary has experienced a significant rise in the registration of pure electric passenger cars, with a 63.9 percent increase in July compared to the same month last year, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA).

This growth positions Hungary as the fourth fastest-growing market for electric vehicles (EVs) in Europe, behind Croatia, the Czech Republic, and Denmark.

From January to July 2024, Hungary’s EV registrations grew nearly 60 percent, a performance only surpassed by Malta, which had lower unit sales. This is particularly notable given the overall 0.4 percent decline in EV registrations across Europe during the same period.

The Ministry of Energy (EM) emphasized its commitment to green energy and the importance of reducing pollution from road transport, a major contributor to emissions. The ministry stated that the adoption of electric vehicles is crucial for climate protection, improving air quality, and boosting economic growth and European competitiveness. They also noted that

the number of electric vehicles in Hungary has risen to 60,000, nearly eight times the figure at the beginning of the decade.

Hungary’s efforts in promoting EVs are important, as evidenced by a 7.1 percent reduction in transport emissions in 2023, exceeding the EU’s 2030 target of a 40 percent reduction. The Ministry of Energy aims for a 50 percent reduction by the start of the next decade, highlighting Hungary’s leadership in environmental sustainability.

To further encourage EV adoption, Hungary plans to launch a support program offering subsidies for electric vehicle purchases and a new call for tenders to install about 100 new e-charging stations nationwide.
