Hungary’s Gas Storage Achieves Yearly Target Ahead of Schedule

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.09.02.

As of September 1, Hungary’s gas storage exceeded EU expectations, achieving around 90% capacity and surpassing the target of 86% set by EU regulations. This early accomplishment means the country is on track to meet the November 1 target of 90% well ahead of schedule.

The current high storage level ensures a secure energy supply for the upcoming winter, with reserves totaling approximately 5.8B cubic meters, surpassing last season’s demand. This robust supply is supported by continuous storage since April and effective energy conservation efforts. Hungary’s gas and electricity prices remain among the lowest in Europe, benefiting domestic consumers.

The Energy Ministry highlighted that Hungary’s storage level and reduction in gas consumption, exceeding EU targets by achieving a 20% reduction compared to the previous five years, demonstrate the country’s commitment to energy security.

Additionally, the ministry emphasized that Hungary’s domestic storage is more than double the EU average.

With effective preparation and high reserves, Hungary is well-positioned for the heating season starting in October. Ongoing support through the home renovation program, offering interest-free loans and grants for energy efficiency improvements, will further help households reduce consumption and maintain low energy costs.
