Women’s Handball Team Makes it Into Quarterfinals Against All Odds

After a difficult start to their Olympic journey this year, the Hungarian women’s national handball team defied expectations and made it into Tokyo’s quarter-finals. Losing against France, then Brazil, then the Russian Olympic Committee in their first three matchups, the team made a legendary comeback against Spain, and now Sweden.

Hungary’s women’s handball team clearly did not let their difficult start at the Olympics hinder their performance. Through their excellent teamwork they were able to defeat Spain 29-25 on July 31. Today they once again surprised the world as they defeated Group B leader Sweden 26-23.

The magnitude of such an accomplishment cannot go unnoticed, since the matchups against Spain and Sweden were expected to be more difficult than the leadups which Hungary had lost.

Spain is currently ranked as the second-best team in the world, while Sweden had been running on a winning streak with the most points in the group. Also adding to the challenge was the absence of center back Anikó Kovacsics and left back Zita Szucsánszki because of injuries.

This is the first Olympics the Hungarian women’s handball team has qualified for in 13 years, and their achievements thus far already speak volumes. Their quarter finals match, expected to take place against Norway on Wednesday, will hopefully set the stage for another Hungarian Olympic medal.
