“We are not investigating any Ukrainian refugee to see whether or not they are conscripted. Hungary does not extradite them to Ukraine,” Zsolt Semjén told atv.hu.
The Austrian authorities have recently refused to extradite men of conscription age who arrived in the country from Ukraine. The Polish newspaper Do Rzeczy reported that Austria is the first European Union country to refuse to extradite conscripts to Ukraine. Poland, on the other hand, has begun extraditing men of conscript age who left Ukraine illegally since February 24, 2022 to the Ukrainian authorities.
According to press reports, there are currently some 14,000 men aged between 18 and 54 in Austria who have left their country because of the war.
All refugees from Ukraine are free people in Hungary.”
We do not investigate whether or not Ukrainians consider any Ukrainian refugee to be a conscript. Hungary will not extradite them to Ukraine, Zsolt Semjén, Deputy Prime Minister of Hungary, told atv.hu. “Every refugee from Ukraine is a free person in Hungary, who is free to decide whether to stay here, go to the West or – if he or she so chooses – go back,” the deputy prime minister in charge of national policy said in response to a question.
“All refugees from Ukraine are safe in Hungary. Neither he nor his data will be extradited,” Semjén said in response to a journalist’s question.
