Donald Trump, the 47th President of the United States, was inaugurated in Washington on Monday. The ceremony and the presidential address were held indoors in the dome of the US Capitol, as usual, due to the extreme cold. The Hungarian political elit quickly reacted to the inauguration of the Republican President.
The inauguration of Donald Trump has received worldwide reaction from politicians. In a post on social networking site X, Viktor Orbán congratulated to the US President on his inauguration, adding that it is now “our turn to shine”.

In his speech assessing the Hungarian EU Presidency, Viktor Orbán stated that it was the “beginning of a new era.” This semester will go down in the history books as the period in which Donald Trump and the European patriots began to transform the Western world, the Prime Minister said. Speaking about the need for peace in the war, he said that we must keep the diplomatic channels of negotiation open. We have done so, even if we could only do so on a national basis, because the majority of EU Member States still opposed peace, he added.
We have persevered and today Hungarians are proud to hand over the baton of peace to the new US administration. Good intentions, courage, diplomatic skill, and Christian duty are all very well, but in the end peace requires strength,
the Prime Minister emphasized. He reminded that in 2010, the government drafted a new constitution and introduced a new way of organizing the state, based on sovereignty, based on Christian traditions, and the protection of the family. “As they say about us in America, we were Trump before Trump,” joked Mr. Orbán.
Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok wrote on Facebook that “the time of M.A.G.A. has come”. His message had two meanings, as he was referring to Trump’s slogan “Make America Great Again”, however, “maga” in Hungarian means “you” in a formal address. Hence the Hungarian President’s message can alternatively read: “your time has come”.
Balázs Orbán, the political director of the Prime Minister, also congratulated Donald Trump and posted a photo of Hungarian politicians with the President.
Fidesz MEP Kinga Gál, vice president of the Patriots for Europe political group, attended Trump’s inauguration. She wrote in her Facebook post that “Trump’s presidency marks the beginning of a patriotic turn in the Western world, which we Patriots represent in Europe.”
She concluded her post with writing: “No migration, no gender, no war!” and congratulating Donald Trump.
One of the main opposition politicians, Péter Magyar, also reacted to the inauguration of the new President. After congratulating Trump, he pledged to seek good relations with the US regardless of party affiliation, reported Telex.
In his inauguration speech, Donald Trump promised to declare an immediate national energy emergency, replenish strategic reserves, make room for increased energy production and restore US exports to the world, reported Fortune. “We will bring prices down, fill our strategic reserves up again, right to the top and export American energy all over the world.
We will be a rich nation again and it is that liquid gold under our feet that will help to do it,”
said the new US president.
Trump emphasized that America’s golden age begins now. “From this day forward, our country will flourish and be respected again all over the world. We will be the envy of every nation, and we will not allow ourselves to be taken advantage of any longer”, he stated. The US President added: “Our sovereignty will be reclaimed. Our safety will be restored. The scales of justice will be rebalanced.”
