The Artificial Intelligence National Laboratory (MILAB) is one of the most successful national laboratories, said László Palkovics, government commissioner responsible for artificial intelligence (AI), at a press conference held on Monday, to present the results. At the event, MILAB’s professional partners briefly presented their achievements in the field of artificial intelligence.

MILAB was established with the aim of strengthening Hungary’s position in the field of AI, and has thus become one of the most successful national laboratories, emphasized László Palkovics. The establishment of the laboratory is strongly linked to the Artificial Intelligence Coalition created in 2018, by companies, universities, and scientific workshops, as well as to digital welfare programs.

He also said that they are currently developing a competence map that in a few weeks, will reveal who is doing what in the field of AI in Hungary, but “it is already clear that Hungary is among the leading countries in this field.”

He explained that

in 2020, Hungary was the fourth country in Europe, after Finland, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, to develop an artificial intelligence strategy at the government level.

He pointed out that five years have passed since the strategy was created, hence it has become necessary to revise it, which will be completed soon.

László Bódis, Deputy State Secretary for Innovation, said that AI is not just a technological innovation, but also has the potential for economic and social breakthroughs, which is why the Artificial Intelligence Coalition was created.

He emphasized that

MILAB brings together ten partners and fulfills its role well; for instance, it has revealed where and what capabilities can be taken to economic exploitation. We must continue to give priority support to those laboratories that have delivered the expected results.”

Roland Jakab, CEO of HUN-REN Hungarian Research Center and President of the Artificial Intelligence Coalition, said that MILAB is not only a research center but also a dynamically developing ecosystem that works together with industry in an exemplary manner. The innovations resulting from the cooperation between MILAB and HUN-REN are already yielding tangible results: they are effective in healthcare, telecommunications, and public administration, and generate significant economic benefits.

The revenue from MILAB’s direct cooperation with industrial players already exceeds two billion forints (4.9 million euros), which clearly shows that we have achieved significant results since 2020,”

he said. In order to accelerate economic transfer, Hunrentech, the technology transfer company of the HUN-REN Hungarian Research Network, has recently started operating and will contribute to the practical application of scientific results, the HUN-REN CEO noted.
