The European Union’s migration pact would automate illegal migration, according to the Hungarian government.
“More and more EU Member States are introducing border controls due to increasing illegal migration, which is already threatening the fundamental achievements of the European Union, the free movement of people, goods, and capital, and thus the EU economy,” Bence Rétvári, Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of Interior told public news channel M1 on Monday.
The politician stressed that Hungary is opposed to the EU’s migration pact, as the proposal means the automation of illegal migration.
Rétvári recalled that according to the pact, migrants would continue to be able to apply for asylum within the EU. “The Hungarian government’s position is that they should only be able to do so outside the borders of the EU because once they are inside, it is very difficult to deport them,” he explained.
The State Secretary also said that the authorities had already taken action against more than 150,000 illegal migrants in Hungary this year. He recalled that ten percent of those in prison are human smugglers. “This costs Hungarian taxpayers billions,” he added.
Rétvári said the EU should pay at least half of the costs of border protection. “The border fence is not only to protect Hungary, but the whole of Europe,” he pointed out. “However, the EU has not even reimbursed Hungary for two percent of the 600 billion forints spent on the border fence,” he said.
