Hungary Intensifies Strategic Cooperation with Uzbekistan

Viktor Orbán attends the summit of the Turkic Council and has bilateral meetings in Samarkand. The prime minister pledged to strengthen cooperation between Hungary and Uzbekistan.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán held talks with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev about economic and energy cooperation as well as about the tightening of cultural and educational relations in Samarkand on Thursday.

Viktor Orbán said that “in the present war and sanctions crisis, the whole of Europe, with Hungary in it is struggling in order not to lose its economic impetus”. “In this situation, however, rather than slowing down the intensity of cooperation with Uzbekistan, our strategic partner in the region, we are seeking to increase it”, he pointed out. Hungary and Uzbekistan are strengthening the common projects launched in the areas of nuclear energy, the chemical industry, the financial sector, and telecommunications.

The prime minister announced that the number of Hungarian scholarship grants provided for Uzbek students in Hungary would be raised from 120 to 170 annually.

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev said that in Uzbekistan Hungarian businesspeople and companies are welcome and are given every assistance to make their investments successful.

Viktor Orbán arrived in Samarkand on Wednesday to attend the ninth summit of the Organization of Turkic States and to hold bilateral talks with Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Members of the Organization of Turkic States include Turkey, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Azerbaijan; Hungary and Turkmenistan joined the organization in the status of observers.
