After fifty-two years, Hungary has once again won the men’s team épée event at the Olympic Games, as the team of Gergely Siklósi, Máté Koch, Tibor Andrásfi, Dávid Nagy beat the defending champions Japan by a single shot in the final on Friday.
The Hungarians defeated the Kazakhs and the French 45-30 – with Siklósi, Koch, Andrásfi – and in the final – with Dávid Nagy – they defeated the Japanese 26-25. The Hungarian team, after winning last year’s European Championship, kept its original line-up for the final, with Tibor Andrásfi, who finished fourth in the individual event in Paris, 2019 world champion and Tokyo silver medallist Gergely Siklósi and last year’s World Championship gold medalist Máté Koch.
For the defending champions, Japan’s Kano Koki fought for the doubles, alongside Jamada Masaru and Komata Akira, who replaced Minobe Kazujasu earlier in the day. The Hungarian victory was greeted with a huge cheer in the stands, with team members celebrating with the national flag.
