Google has once again published its annual summary of what users searched for most in Hungary. Sports, coronavirus vaccination, and some politics were the most googled topics of Hungarians in 2021.
The coronavirus has continued to dominate our lives, so it’s no surprise that many of the most googled terms are related to it, including vaccination. Hungary is a country crazy for football, so it was expected that the European Championship would be one of the most popular topics, as was the drama of Danish footballer, Christian Eriksen, whose battle for life on the pitch shocked the whole world. Tv series Squid Game was no doubt the success series of 2021, as reflected in the Hungarian searches as well.
Hungarian public life is represented on Google’s Top 10 list by two popular topics. On the one hand, there has been a huge increase in interest in celebrity media personality, Andrea Várkonyi, who this year married Hungary’s richest man, the gas-fitter turned multi-billionaire, Lőrinc Mészáros, a childhood friend of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. But the opposition’s candidate for prime minister, Péter Márki-Zay, was also among the most searched topics on Google. This is not surprising either, since he entered the opposition primaries as a not-so-well-known candidate and then won it despite being considered an underdog. His success, many say, can be attributed in large part to the ‘people of the internet’ and especially young people.
