Hungary and Türkiye Celebrate Shared Heritage with Unveiling Yunus Emre’s Statue

“Hungary and Türkiye’s enduring friendship and strategic alliance,” emphasized the Deputy Secretary of State for Security Policy during the unveiling of the statue of 13th century Turkish poet Yunus Emre in Lakitelek, central Hungary.

At the “Hungarikum Liget“, Henrietta Balajthy highlighted Yunus Emre’s profound impact on Turkish literature as a versatile poet, shaping the Turkish language with his use of colloquial vocabulary. She noted the upcoming commemoration of the 100th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Hungary and Türkiye, signaling an elevation of partnership to a strategic level and the launch of the Hungarian-Turkish Cultural Year.

Ms. Balajthy also mentioned plans for a joint science and innovation year.

Sándor Lezsák, Fidesz deputy speaker of the Parliament, and chairman of the board of trustees of the Népfőiskola Foundation, praised the bronze statue crafted by sculptor Györgyi Lantos. He emphasized the significance of the statue in Lakitelek, symbolizing the shared values and heritage of the Hungarian people.

Mustafa Şentop, former Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye, highlighted Yunus Emre’s significance in Turkish poetry and his influence on European culture.

He recounted the poet’s introduction to Europe by a Hungarian prisoner in the Ottoman Empire, underscoring the deep historical ties between Hungary and Türkiye.

Gülşen Karanis Ekşioğlu, Türkiye’s ambassador to Budapest, emphasized the statue’s representation of universal values and the enduring friendship between the two nations. She noted the presence of Yunus Emre’s philosophy in both Hungarian and Turkish cultures.

The unveiling ceremony and discussions underscored the strong bonds between Hungary and Türkiye, rooted in shared history, culture, and mutual respect.
