The Hungarian Youth Conference (MIK) celebrated its 25th anniversary this Saturday. State Secretary Lőrinc Nacsa said that the goal set when the organization was founded has not changed: there is high demand for an establishment that helps Hungarian youth learn how to think as one nation, not just to help the Hungarian culture survive, but also to help the motherland grow and prosper.
“The Hungarian Youth Conference (MIK) is the highest-level conciliation forum for the Hungarian youth in Hungary and abroad, established on the initiative of the Hungarian Government in Budapest on November 27th, 1999 with extensive participation from Hungarian and expatriate organizations as well,” according to the official website of the organization. The Secretary of State for National Policy, Lőrinc Nacsa, said that their mission is to strengthen Hungarian representation around the world. It is important that young people also play their part in this, emphasized the politician.

Nacsa stressed that strengthening Hungarian representation around the world is a common goal, and that Hungarians living across the border in Felvidék (Slovakia), Transcarpathia (Ukraine), Transylvania (Romania), Vojvodina (Serbia), Drávaszög (Croatia), Prekmurje (Slovenia), Burgenland (Austria), and the diaspora should also play their part.
The basic principle of today’s Hungarian national policy is that every Hungarian, regardless of where they live, can count on the motherland,
emphasized the State Secretary.
Katalin Szili, the Prime Minister’s special envoy, said that the State Secretariat for National Policy had declared this year the ‘Year of the Future Generation.’ She suggested that they should make March 10th Hungarian Youth Day.

The MIK had lived up to the expectations set out in its founding document, namely that it would assume responsibility for the nation and for the tasks that unite the youth.
State Secretary Veronika Varga-Bajusz added that the inaugural meeting of the Hungarian Youth Conference, 25 years on, was a milestone not only in the cause of the empowerment of Hungarian youth in the Carpathian Basin, but also in the strengthening of national cohesion across the borders of today.
Tamás Sulyok, President of the Republic, sent a letter of welcome to the event.
He emphasized that the strength of the Hungarian nation lies in the strength of its communities.
Overall, the MIK provides a forum for dialogue and debates. All grants and programs are designed to be accessible to young Hungarians abroad. University scholarships in neighboring countries will be redesigned this year to encourage young Hungarians to stay and thrive in their homeland. A new scholarship will be introduced to enable them to study at the best universities and use their knowledge to strengthen their communities back home.
