Hungarian Troops to Contribute to the Stabilization of Central Africa

Hungary Today 2023.10.24.

On behalf of the government, the Ministry of Defense has submitted a proposal for the launch of a military mission in Chad. The plan for the military mission was presented last week by Defense Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky.

The mission, planned at the invitation of the President of Chad, aims to strengthen the stability of Chad and thus the security of Europe and Hungary, and to stem the threat of new migration flows from Africa, reports honvedelem.hu.

The presence of Hungarian troops will strengthen the fight against terrorism and help to ensure the smooth delivery of humanitarian aid and local development through the Hungary Helps program.

Announcing the military mission in Chad, Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky said: “There are already two major armed conflicts and millions of migrants are pouring into Europe from Africa and the Middle East.” The Defense Minister stressed that Hungary is ready to take on further tasks to strengthen the security of Europe and Hungary.

He pointed out that the pro-immigration policy in Brussels has brought great trouble to Europe, with the mass of migrants threatening Europe with security risks and terrorism. He said that the events in Israel and Gaza and the consequences of the terrorist attack in Brussels in Europe were a warning of this, and that migrants had been accompanied by conflicts in the Middle East and violent demonstrations in Europe’s major cities. He added that Hungary’s top priority remains to preserve peace, stop migration and protect its borders.

The minister stressed that the launch of the military mission is important, because Chad, in the Sahel region, has a key role to play in curbing migration from Africa. If Chad becomes unstable, the migration barrier to Europe could be completely broken.

The Minister continued: “Our position is not to bring trouble but to get help to where it is needed, so the Hungarian government has decided to provide complex support to the country, with the Hungary Helps program preparing the opening of a humanitarian and development center in recent weeks and a medical and humanitarian mission helping to care for the local population for several weeks.” With the current proposal for a decision, the government is proposing to send a military mission of up to 200 troops to Chad in spring 2024, to help curb migration, fight terrorism, and support humanitarian aid, said Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky. Furthermore, he stressed that the planned Hungarian military mission is also significant from a military perspective, as it can be launched in cooperation with other nations in the region, but as an independent Hungarian engagement.
