Hungarian Team Preparing “Full Steam” for the Olympics

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.07.01.

The Hungarian team is preparing “full steam” for the Olympics, Ádám Schmidt, State Secretary for Sport, said on Nemzeti Sportrádió (National Sport Radio) on Monday.

“They have to go through the next few weeks with caution and humility and we are confident that these performances can be repeated at the Olympics,” he said, referring to the successes achieved at the European Swimming Championships, the European Canoe Championships in Szeged and the World Pentathlon Championships. He stressed that

the Hungarian team will certainly exceed the number of athletes in the Tokyo Olympics.

Ádám Schmidt also spoke about the coaching program, the priority program for junior coaches. He said that the aim of these programs is to show moral appreciation and to raise awareness of the importance of the work of coaches.

For the most part, the role of a coach is to be altruistic enough to be able to see that a young person has not chosen the right sport because of their talents, abilities and ambitions, then direct them to a sport where they will experience success.

Precisely so that they do not leave sport at the age of 13 or 14 with a sense of failure, but have a bond with sport that will accompany them throughout their life,” Mr. Schmidt said.

He added that he would like more people to choose the career of becoming a coach. “For me, this program is a matter close to my heart in every way,” he added.

The Budapest leg of the Olympic qualifying tournament for urban sports was also discussed. 60,000 people visited the Ludovika Campus for the four-day sporting event, that included BMX freestyle, skateboarding, sport climbing and breakdancing. Ádám Schmidt said it was a successful event, with International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach very pleased with the “impressive and spectacular” turnout, which was largely made up of teenagers and people in their early twenties.
