Hungarian Soldiers Receive 11% Wage Increase from January 1

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.01.05.

The Minister of Defense, Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky, announced a new round of wage increases for Hungarian soldiers starting January 1.

The average increase is 11%, varying by personnel category (12% for crew, 11% for non-commissioned officers, and 10% for officers). This follows the government’s 2022 decision to prioritize wage hikes. The two-stage increase began in September 2022 (averaging 26.4%), and the second phase takes effect from January 1, 2024.

Szalay-Bobrovniczky highlighted the expanded responsibilities of the Hungarian Defense Forces

due to events like the Russian-Ukrainian and Israeli-Palestinian conflicts and the migration wave to Europe. The minister emphasized the continued importance of maintaining soldier readiness. He justified further appreciation for soldiers based on these factors and the international role of the Hungarian Defense Forces.

The salary increase also extends to volunteer and reserve soldiers, along with officer candidates.
