Hungary Today 2021.12.14.

On the third Sunday of Advent, the Hungarian Scouts took over the Peace Light from Bethlehem from their Burgenland colleagues at the Hegyeshalom border crossing.

The Light of Peace was distributed in the Salzburg Cathedral on Saturday when Hungary’s candle was also lit. Afterward, the Burgenland scouts took the light by train to the Austrian-Hungarian border near Hegyeshalom, where they symbolically placed it on the border stone. There, the lantern of the Hungarian scouts was also lit.

The  Light of Peace initiative from Bethlehem was started in 1986 in Austria. Since then, every year during Advent, a candle is lit in the grotto of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem, which is then transported to Austria. In Hungary, it is received every year in a different Catholic or Protestant church, from where the scouts take it all over the country.
