Hungarian Olympic Delegation Is on Track with 65 Athletes So Far

Hungary Today 2023.12.20.

In recent months, Hungary has won five more Olympic quotas, and the process is gathering momentum as the Paris event approaches. The contingent of athletes will be mainly influenced by the participation of the Hungarian national teams.

On July 26, 2024, the Paris Olympics will begin, with a large Hungarian delegation. In September, Nemzeti Sport took a closer look at the situation and prospects of the Hungarian Olympic contingent.

Since then, two gold medal wrestlers, Ismail Musukaev and Dávid Losonczi, have joined the quotas.

In addition, three gymnasts, Csenge Bácskay, Bettina Lili Czifra, and Krisztofer Mészáros, secured quotas in Antwerp in October. In swimming, Ádám Jászó, Zalán Sárkány, Dóra Molnár, and Dalma Sebestyén have quotas, however, the European Championships in Belgrade in June is still a qualification event; therefore, there is plenty of time for those who are aiming for the top. The total number of athletes will be determined by how many of the Hungarian national teams will qualify for Paris (the men’s water polo team has already secured its place). Last summer, the Hungarian Olympic Committee expected a team of between 150 and 200, while three years ago in Tokyo, 173 Hungarian athletes collected a total of 20 medals, with six golds, and seven bronze and silver medals each.

What will happen next summer in terms of medals is not up for discussion, but the fact is that the more individual athletes from Hungary, the more hope for medals.

In kayak canoeing, for example, Hungary has traditionally done very well, with the highest probability of Hungarian teams competing in all events. The men have already won all the quotas, while the women are three short, which the athletes will be able to collect on their home field in Szeged (southern Hungary) between May 8-11.

In fencing, there is no need to worry about the men’s and women’s teams with the qualification period closing at the end of March. Among the individual competitors, Anna Kun is in a safe position for a quota, and Dániel Dósa and Flóra Pásztor are also in very good shape.

In tennis, it is hard to get a clear picture, as anything can happen in the next six months, but Fábián Marozsán is 43rd and Márton Fucsovics 67th in the points table, but many competitors are out of the running because there are a maximum of four singles players per nation, thus the Hungarians’ positions are more than promising.
