In a speech delivered during the European Parliament’s topical debate entitled Whitewashing of the anti-European extreme right in the EU Hungarian MEP Balázs Hidvéghi has argued that the European right is in fact not engaged in whitewashing, instead “it is really about the intellectual terror waged by the European left against everybody who dares to disagree with them”.
The intellectual terror of the left must end! It’s not their prerogative to decide who is a good European or what is true democracy. #Conservatives must never set foot on the path of the @EPPGroup. On the contrary: we must stick to our #Christian democratic values! @Europarl_EN pic.twitter.com/9pZKly3Yg7

According to the Fidesz MEP, the political left “would label as an extremist anybody who is against Islamist migration, who defends the traditional family or defends children from LGBTI propaganda. It shows how hysterical and intolerant the Socialists, the Liberals and the Greens have become. They now openly disrespect the democratic decision of the people”.
In Hidvéghi’s view, when the Swedes and Italians have elected a Conservative government, the EP’s left-wing MEPs have unleashed a vicious attack against them. “Being pro-European does not mean being left-wing, and it is certainly not the prerogative of the left to define what constitutes pro-European or who is a good Conservative or Christian Democrat”, he added.
He also went on to criticize Manfred Weber, and the European Peoples’ Party (EPP) by saying that the debate itself is an illustration of the failed political strategy of the EPP. “Mr Weber, who is curiously absent from the Chamber now, has maneuvered his party into a spectacular dead end”, said Hidvéghi. In his view Manfred Weber and other like-minded politicians, have given up their principles in the hope of a favorable treatment from the left, or a soft treatment by the press.
