In their second group match, the Hungarian men’s water polo team easily won against Brazil (20-6) at Margaret Island to top their group.
Hungary won for the second time at the World Cup after a smooth victory against Montenegro on Tuesday. The last time the men’s polo team played against Brazil was at the 2016 Olympics when Hungary won both times.
Dénes Varga snapped up the player-of-the-match award for his excellent play and his smart tip-in score for the second goal, according to FINA’s website. He scored once more, and afterward spoke to the crowd that hung on every word he said. Balazs Harai, at 35 one of the most senior players competing in his final world championships, scored twice. Rafael Real (33) scored two goals for Brazil, including a deflection that caught the goalkeeper off-guard. FINA writes that Hungary went on a romp that had most players scoring.
On Saturday, Georgia will be next- a win against them is also a must, and if they win, Tamás Märcz’s team can continue directly to the quarter-finals.
