A man who spread propaganda about the Islamic State and identified himself as a supporter of the terrorist organization, has been charged with incitement to war, the Pest County Prosecutor General’s Office said in a statement on Tuesday.

According to the indictment, the man became interested in organizations promoting terrorist methods, including the Islamic State, a few years ago. He had watched videos of executions and built up contacts that allowed him to access Internet sites dealing with the activities of such organizations, which are not publicly available.

They added that terrorist propaganda is typically spread on the internet. Content uploaded to social networking sites is downloaded by members and sympathizers and shared in non-public forums, as large content providers automatically delete such uploads. Such content includes, for example, so-called nasids, or Islamic religious songs.

The suspect registered on a music sharing platform in Germany and uploaded nasids under two user names, several of which were produced by Islamic State press offices. In these, the Islamic State was glorified or indirectly incited to use terrorist methods. The channel set up by the suspect had 41 followers and the content uploaded could be viewed by anyone. Some of the songs received 733 likes.

The man identified himself in internet chats as not directly linked to the Islamic State, but as a supporter.

The Pest County Prosecutor’s Office has charged the man with the crime of incitement to war, according to the statement.

This is not the first time that a supporter of the Islamic State was apprehended in Hungary. Last year, a 22-year-old man had sworn allegiance to the Islamic State and was planning to carry out an attack in Hungary with his partner. He had planned to drive his car into a crowd in Siófok, while his partner was to detonate a pipe bomb at the European Football Championship in Budapest. With the help of the Hungarian Counter Terrorism Center (TEK), the police caught the terrorist in time.
