Hungarian cinema achieved unprecedented popularity in Romania in 2024, with both audience numbers and revenues breaking previous records, according to data recently published by the National Center for Cinematography (CNC) in Bucharest.
Last year, 355 films were shown in Romania, fewer than in 2023, when there were 407 premieres. Of the newly released films, 84 came from the United States, 58 were Romanian, 39 French, 28 British, 13 Italian, and 12 each from Hungary and Germany.
Although more Hungarian films were shown in Romania a year earlier, with 21, last year’s audience numbers and box office takings significantly exceeded the 2023 figures. In 2024, 66,344 viewers saw Hungarian films screened for the first time in Romanian cinemas, significantly more than a year earlier, when the number of viewers was 18,132. These generated revenues of RON 1.322 million (EUR 261,484), which is 387 percent more than in 2023.
Last year, a total of 69 Hungarian films were shown in Romanian cinemas, which were seen by 76,238 people and generated RON 1.467 million (EUR 290,223) in revenue. Hungarian films were seen by more people than Spanish (36,005 viewers) and Italian (75,079 viewers) films, and only slightly fewer than German films (80,451 viewers).
In 2024, Romanian cinemas had 11,224 million viewers and total revenues of RON 292.9 million (approx. EUR 57.9 million). Attendance fell by about 14 percent, while revenues decreased by five percent.
