The European market for electric cars is growing fast, and in the Central European region, Hungary leads the way, according to a market study by K&H Bank, Világgazdaság reports. However, Central Europe still lags behind the EU average, where the share of electric-powered cars rose to more than 12 percent last year.

According to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), 12.1 percent of newly registered passenger cars in the first quarter of this year were pure electric vehicles. The share has increased significantly compared to the same period in 2022, when it was 10 percent, according to the portal.

In the first quarter of this year, the share of electric cars in the new car market in Hungary increased from 4.4 percent to almost 6 percent. This result surpasses the 2.4 percent in the Czech Republic, 3.3 percent in Poland, and 1.8 percent in Slovakia.

Sales statistics also show that there were 32,000 electric and PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) passenger cars and light commercial vehicles on the road in Hungary, out of a total passenger car fleet of nearly 4.1 million. In other words, the share of electric vehicles was 0.78 percent, compared with 0.21 and 0.17 percent in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, respectively.

Levente Suba, head of sustainability at K&H, told the portal that while the spread of electric vehicles is held back by the fact that they are more expensive than conventional cars,

free parking in major cities, free electricity from solar panels installed on many family homes, and growing social awareness of environmental sustainability  contribute to the positive figures.
