Hungarian cinema will be in the spotlight at the 24th edition of the Transilvania International Film Festival (TIFF), held in Cluj-Napoca (Kolozsvár) between June 13-22, with a dedicated Hungarian Day featuring six contemporary films and a major retrospective of famous Hungarian director Béla Tarr.

Continuing its tradition of spotlighting Hungarian filmmaking, TIFF 2025 will present a selection of six recent films from Hungary, complemented by post-screening Q&A sessions with the filmmakers. Highlights include Minden rendben (Growing Down) by Bálint Dániel Sós, a Berlinale-premiered crime thriller; Hogyan tudnék élni nélküled (How Could I Live Without You), Dénes Orosz’s nostalgic musical comedy set in 1990s Lake Balaton; and Mélypont érzés (Beyond Rock Bottom), a raw documentary by Ádám Miklós about the recovery journeys of two drug addicts.

Also featured are Bálint Szimler’s award-winning Fekete pont (Lesson Learned), Szabolcs Hajdu’s Egy százalék indián (Vulture’s Wake), and Mihály Schwechtje’s Sünvadászat (A Hunt for Hedgehogs). In addition to these new works, TIFF will pay tribute to Béla Tarr, as Hungary Today reported, by screening eight of his most famous works and presenting him with a lifetime achievement award at the closing gala on June 22. The director will also host a workshop for young filmmakers on June 21.

The festival takes place at various locations throughout Cluj-Napoca. Screenings are held indoors at cinemas, while a large outdoor screen will be set up in the city center for audiences to enjoy popular films under the open sky. Additionally, special screenings are hosted at the nearby Bánffy Castle in Bontida, just outside Cluj-Napoca.

The Hungarian Day program is supported by the National Film Institute, the Liszt Institute in Bucharest, Filmtett, and MOL. The film festival itself is sponsored by the European Commission.
