The Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta is launching a comprehensive aid program to help the daily life of Christian communities in Syria, the head of International Relations of the organization announced on X.
Dániel Solymár wrote that “until autumn 2025, we will be supporting the daily life and work of nearly 500 Christian monks, priests, and church communities.” He added:
This is a rare form of development – this time for the survival of church communities.”
“Supporting the survival of church communities is an important element in supporting the country as a whole, its population and the returning refugees. It not only supports Christianity in the Middle East but also creates the possibility of a new beginning for Syria,” he explained.
Another piece of good news for #Syria: until autumn 2025, we will be supporting the daily life and work of nearly 500 Christian monks, priests and church communities. This is a rare form of development – this time for the survival of church communities

An earlier social media post by Dániel Solymári reveals that the Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta has been present in Syria for 25 years. According to the organization’s website, the Middle Eastern country is both ethnically and religiously diverse. Kurds, Armenians, Assyrians, and Druze live here alongside Arabs, who make up the majority. As for the religions, Shia, Sunni, and Alawi Muslims, as well as Christians, live side by side.
Modern Syria gained its independence in 1946, but political instability has been almost constant since then.
Since 2011, a civil war has been raging in the country, which has recently decreased in intensity, largely due to the defeat of the Islamic State, but the situation remains unstable.
Since its creation in 1988, the Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta has been an active player in various humanitarian crises, both man-made and natural. First in the care of East German refugees, then during the Romanian and Southern Slavic revolutions, they were involved in the care of the victims. Later, they expanded their aid coverage to remote areas such as Asia, South America, and Africa. In remote countries, they are present with medical, health, or refugee care professionals who are constantly involved in humanitarian aid projects that affect the local population.
