Hungary’s position in the Western world will be strengthened by the new US administration, Balázs Orbán, the Hungarian Prime Minister’s political director, said in Washington on Friday after attending the CPAC Conservative Conference.

In an interview with MTI, Balázs Orbán pointed out that with the Trump administration taking office, there is a political “tailwind” from the United States to Hungary, rather than the very strong “headwind” experienced earlier, which has tangible signs. Among these, he mentioned that talks have started between the two governments on ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

In addition, the new US administration has stopped funding liberal, progressive non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that had previously received support and had been interfering in Hungarian domestic politics.

Regarding US efforts to resolve the war in Ukraine, Balázs Orbán noted that the new administration has different priorities, does not see the war as a strategic issue for itself and would like to bring it to an end as soon as possible. He believed that the opening of direct negotiations between the US and Russia would reduce the risk of escalation.

On Thursday, Balázs Orbán addressed a panel discussion at CPAC and met with US Vice President J.D. Vance in Washington.

In the context of the meeting, he stressed the importance of the institutional ties built between American and Hungarian patriotic forces, which, in his opinion, can be built upon.

“It is very important that there is a common foundation of values on which to build,” the political director said, assessing the experience of his visit to Washington. Balázs Orbán also noted that “it is good for Hungarians to see that US politicians in serious positions of government are formulating very similar things to those that the Hungarian government has been formulating for the past 15 years.”
