A panel discussion at the Hungarian Embassy in Washington D.C. commemorated the 300th anniversary of Michael Kovats de Fabriczy, a Hungarian hussar colonel who played a pivotal role in the American War of Independence.
The event, attended by high-ranking diplomats and military officers, emphasized the enduring Hungarian-American military partnership. Speakers highlighted the long-standing military cooperation, especially between Hungary and the Ohio National Guard. Robert Riley, foreign policy adviser to the U.S. Pentagon National Guard Commander, noted,
the relationship is based on reciprocity, not one-way traffic,” emphasizing the mutual benefits of the alliance.
Pál Péter Schmitt, speaking on behalf of the ambassador, stressed the importance of maintaining NATO as a defense alliance, urging NATO to avoid direct involvement in the Ukraine conflict.
It is crucial that NATO stays out of the military conflict in Ukraine,” he stated, underscoring solidarity within the alliance while advocating for peace.
Hungary’s defense modernization was also discussed. Brigadier General László Szegő pointed out that in 2023, Hungary’s defense spending exceeded the NATO-required 2% of GDP, with over 40% devoted to military development.
Mr. Schmitt’s comments extended to the broader geopolitical context, acknowledging the tensions surrounding NATO’s role in Ukraine. He expressed concern over the potential for escalation, while Colonel Gábor Boldizsár reminded attendees of Hungary’s contributions to NATO.
The event honored Michael Kovats de Fabriczy’s legacy in shaping the U.S. cavalry, celebrating a historical bond that has now lasted for over a century. The discussion reaffirmed the continued strength and stability of Hungarian-American military relations.
