Hope Is the Theme of the Transcarpathian Spiritual Lenten Retreat

Hungary Today 2025.03.07.

On the occasion of the Jubilee Year, a two-day spiritual Lenten retreat will be held at the Esterházy János Pilgrimage Center in Dolné Obdokovce (Alsóbodok), Slovakia. Szabolcs Sajgó will be giving guidance and support to the participants as spiritual father, and groups of the Christian Intellectual Alliance will be joining as guests.

On March 7-8, a Lenten retreat will be held at the Esterházy János Pilgrimage Center in Dolné Obdokovce. The central theme of the event, hope, is also reflected in the retreat’s motto: “Let us pass through the gate of hope.”

Those present will share their experiences about the great challenges of our day and age, and will encounter the testimonies of János Esterházy and his fellow martyrs.

Imre Molnár, a historian and biographer of János Esterházy, said that the martyr’s admirers have a busy weekend ahead of them. On Friday, in addition to a pastoral meeting in Dolné Obdokovce, events will also take place at the Parliament in Budapest. They are preparing for the János Esterházy Memorial Ceremony and Awards Event.

The award, named after an emblematic figure of the struggle for Christianity, the unity of the Hungarian nation, and the peoples of Central Europe, will be granted this year to Cardinal Dominik Jaroslav Duka, retired Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Prague, and the Association of Hungarian Large Families in Transcarpathia.

“The Dolné Obdokovce spiritual retreat will also begin on Friday. The pilgrimage center will be visited by student and adult groups of the Christian Religious Association. The students will stay at the pilgrimage center until Sunday. There will be a joint, silent prayer, and they will get to know the pilgrimage center,” Ottó Csámpai Jr., the director of the pilgrimage center, explained the program.

The groups will be led by Father Szabolcs Sajgó, artist Zsuzsanna Dávid, Zoltán Ďurčo, Episcopal Vicar for Hungarian Catholics in the Archdiocese of Nitra, Canon Imre Molnár, and Ottó Csámpai. They will participate in the spiritual retreats and Masses with them. These events are also open to the public, who are warmly welcome to join.
