The Sumo World Championships in Japan, home of the sport, brought a historic Hungarian success. Enikő Elekes, who won the gold medal at the U20 World and European Wrestling Championships this year, received the first Hungarian sumo world title in Tokyo, writes Magyar Nemzet.
Most competitors do sumo as a complementary sport to wrestling, including the 19-year-old Enikő Elekes, who has a very strong record in wrestling at her age group level. In June of this year, she won the gold medal in the 65 kg weight class at the U20 European Championships in Spain, and in August she triumphed at the U20 World Championships in Jordan.
Elekes made history in Amman, Jordan, becoming the first female junior world champion in the history of Hungarian wrestling.
She had previously won the world and European titles in her age group in 2021, also in the 65 kg class. This year she also competed in the adult division, finishing eighth in the Hungarian Grand Prix and 10th in the Zagreb Open in Croatia, and is currently ranked 22nd in the world in her weight class.
In sumo, she is now one of the world’s best in the 65 kg weight class, having won the World Championships in Tokyo.
She easily outclassed her Polish rival in the semifinals and reached the final, where she battled a Taiwanese sumo wrestler for the gold medal.
Elekes was unstoppable in the final and became the first Hungarian women’s world champion in the sport.
According to László Ancsin, president of the Hungarian Sumo Association, Elekes’ achievement is remarkable in many ways. “She is a student of the Kozma István Hungarian Wrestling Academy Foundation and has achieved excellent results in wrestling. So far, she has proven herself in sumo several times, but by winning the title in the motherland of the sport, Hungary has won,” Ancsin pointed out.
The next big sumo competition will be the World Combat Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where Patrik Buzás and Arnold Pap will represent Hungary. The games start on October 20 and will run until the end of the month.
