Higher Level of Terror Alert Ordered after Escalating Conflict between Israel and Iran

Hungary Today 2024.04.16.

After the Defense Council meeting, a higher level terror alert may have been declared in the country, Magyar Nemzet reports. This could entail deploying reinforced police forces in public areas and elevating the security level of protected persons, strategic companies, dangerous factories, and Jewish-affiliated institutions.

Following a meeting of the Defense Council on Sunday, it was learned that the terror alert level in Hungary had been raised. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán convened the Defense Council after Iran’s attack on Israel. In response to the situation, he expressed the commitment to safeguarding the peace and security of Hungarian families amid global conflicts.

Mr. Orbán’s condemnation of Iran’s attack was accompanied by concerns about its potential to escalate into a broader conflict, posing a serious threat not only to the Middle East but also to Hungary and the entire world.

He also announced plans to travel to Brussels to discuss the war situation with European leaders.

József Horváth, former Deputy Director-General for Operations, Civil Defense and Military Intelligence, explained that such orders prompt a sharpening of information sources and increased cooperation with partner services abroad.

The Center for Fundamental Rights’ security policy advisor highlighted the elevated security measures for protected leaders and critical infrastructure.

Additionally, citizens may notice more armed patrols in public areas, especially in large cities, with potential involvement of the Hungarian Defense Forces. As the festival season approaches, securing large public events without unduly restricting movement poses a challenge for counter-terrorism and national security experts. Moreover, institutions such as foreign missions, embassies, and those serving the Jewish community require reinforced security measures.

UPDATE

Népszava reported that Magyar Nemzet‘s information was wrong that the terror alert level had been raised after the attack on Israel on Saturday. Since 2016, level 3 alert has been in force, and it has not changed even after the attacks.
