The prestigious title of “Winery of the Year in Hungary” for 2025 has been awarded to St. Andrea Vineyard in Egerszalók (northeast Hungary). The recognition, established by the National Council of Wine Communities, the Hungarian Wine Academy, and the Hungarian Winegrowers’ Association, highlights the exceptional contributions of the Lőrincz family to Hungarian winemaking, published turizmus.com.
Led by father and son—György Lőrincz Sr. and Jr.—St. Andrea represents a multigenerational success story, rooted in deep faith and dedication.
As State Secretary for Agriculture Imre Hubai emphasized during the award ceremony,
The family’s unity is a vital force behind the winery’s excellence, making it a wellspring of creativity, knowledge, and commitment. This invisible yet powerful energy has helped elevate both the wines of St. Andrea and the international prestige of the Eger wine region.
The winery cultivates 50 hectares across ten vineyards in Eger, producing approximately 250,000 bottles annually. Their wines have gained widespread international acclaim. Notably, their Nagy-Eged 2017 was named one of the world’s top 50 wines by Decanter (a renowned monthly magazine promoting wine culture) in 2021, and Agapé 2018 was similarly recognized by James Suckling (an American wine and cigar critic, former Senior Editor and European Bureau Chief of Wine Spectator) in 2023.
St. Andrea’s winemaking philosophy centers on terroir-driven production, careful vineyard selection, and high-quality blends under the Superior and Grand Superior labels.
Their wine range includes iconic local varieties such as Egri Csillag (Star of Eger) and Egri Bikavér (Bull’s Blood from Eger) along with estate wines like Napbor (Sun Wine), Örökké (Forever), Áldás (Blessing), and Merengő (Musing, Pondering). These wines convey the message of traditional yet personal expressions of the Eger terroir to a broader wine-aficionado audience.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the award also reflects the broader success of Hungarian wineries in adapting to evolving technologies and consumer habits, reinforcing the global reputation of Hungarian wine.
Looking ahead, the Lőrincz family has long-term ambitions. Their latest initiative, the Egri Superior Circle, aims to unite top producers and further elevate the Eger wine region on the global wine map. Speaking about his father:
“I am blessed to work alongside my father. To me, he is the finest winemaker in Hungary—thoughtful, quiet, yet determined. He has borne many great decisions in life with strength and love. He teaches acceptance, patience, courage, and service. Even through setbacks, his enthusiasm never fades. We must live our calling with faith and our daily lives with gratitude. There’s nothing more we could wish for,”
said György Lőrincz Jr.
