President Katalin Novák highlighted the importance of traditional family values in Sydney on Tuesday after her meeting with former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott. The Hungarian Head of State and Abbott discussed possible actions to combat the demographic ice age, and after a one-to-one meeting, prominent representatives of Australia also joined their discussion.
Katalin Novák said that Hungary’s family policy goes against the mainstream as it is truly family-centered. Population decline has been going on for 40 years, but in addition to tackling demographic challenges, a family-friendly approach and the protection of traditional family values are of paramount importance, she said, adding that she was ready to share details on family-friendly measures. He recalled that the Budapest Demographic Summit was held for the fifth time in Hungary this year, and has been organized every two years since 2015.
She pointed out that almost 100,000 Hungarians live in Australia as a community, cherishing Hungarian culture and traditions, and are thus able to preserve their Hungarian identity.
She stressed that
one of the aims of her visit to Australia was to maintain contact with Hungarians, and as there is a significant Hungarian diaspora in Australia, she wanted to celebrate the anniversary of the 1956 Revolution and the 1956 War of Independence with them.
On Tuesday, Katalin Novák also visited the Melbourne Cricket Ground, where she spoke to Cecília Hartmann, a kayaker who came in fourth in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. “She told us about the Olympics held a month after the revolution was crushed, and about the family divisions that left scars that would not go away,” the President said, pointing out that hundreds of Hungarian families were torn apart by the revolution and communist repression.
One of the main focuses of the president’s visit to Australia on Tuesday was to build relations between the two countries. In the framework of strengthening the ties between Hungary and Australia, Novák met with Margaret Elaine Gardner in Melbourne, Governor of Victoria, with whom she discussed women’s empowerment and strengthening economic ties.
Afterwards, in Sydney, the Hungarian President presented the demographic challenges facing Western civilization, as well as measures to strengthen Hungarian families and encourage childbearing at the Australian Catholic University, where she met with key figures in Australian economic and public life.
