Harald Vilimsky Suggests Viktor Orbán Should Be Head of European Commission

Hungary Today 2024.05.21.

Viktor Orbán should lead the European Commission, said Harald Vilimsky, the lead nominee of the Freedom Party of Austria’s (FPÖ) EP list, writes 24.hu.

According to the Austrian newspaper Neue Kronen Zeitung, Mr. Vilimsky believes that the FPÖ should be at the center of the European Parliament’s political debate.

He argues that this move would benefit Europe as a whole, because Viktor Orbán is seen as a counterpoint to the current EU leadership and a guarantee that illegal immigration will not continue at its current rate.

According to the newspaper, the Austrian MEP confirmed that the EU’s apparatus would be streamlined, with a number of powers returned to national governments to restore more direct democracy. He denied, however, that the FPÖ would abolish the direct election of MEPs, although in February he had called Viktor Orbán’s initiative on the subject well worth considering.
