Greece an Important Partner in the Fight against Illegal Migration, Says Minister

Hungary Today 2025.05.06.

The preservation of peace and stability in the Western Balkans and the protection of the external borders of the European Union are in the common interest of Hungary and Greece, said Hungarian Defense Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky in Athens, where he held talks with his Greek counterpart, Nikos Dendias.

“The visit was also an opportunity to discuss in person the challenges posed by illegal migration in our countries. I thanked my colleague Nikos Dendias for the serious work he is doing to curb the flow of migrant boats,” said the Hungarian Minister. He stressed that in addition to the tightened Hungarian border control, Hungary is also involved in the protection of the Greek border within the framework of the EU border protection agency Frontex, and is also represented at the operational command in Greece in the command of the naval operation EUNAVFOR Aspides, which guarantees the security of European maritime trade routes.

Hungary also contributes to the stability of neighboring regions that are crucial for Europe in other ways, and we give priority to supporting persecuted Christian communities,”

the minister noted.

Mr. Szalay-Bobrovniczky stressed that both countries are making a major contribution to the security of the Western Balkans, as they are major contributors to the EUFOR ALTHEA and KFOR missions that are ensuring peace in the region.

With regard to the acceleration of the accession of the Western Balkan countries to the European Union, the minister underlined that Hungary will continue to support the merit-based EU accession process, as this is the only way to ensure long-term stability and economic prosperity in the region. At the same time, he added, Hungary does not support Brussels’ rushing Ukraine, which is not ready for accession, into the European Union without any common sense.

One of the main topics of the ministerial meeting was the strengthening of Hungarian-Greek defense cooperation, especially in the field of military education, training and defense innovation, as exemplified by the planned cooperation between the Greek Defense Innovation Center and the Defense Innovation Research Institute (VIKI),

Mr. Szalay-Bobrovniczky underlined.

“We consider the exchange of experience as extremely important for strengthening our defense capabilities, especially in a world with constantly changing security challenges. We have identified that human resources policy is also crucial for the development of the Greek armed forces. Like Hungary, Greece has reorganized the number of military leaders and modernized the command structure,” said the Defense Minister.
