Hungary Today 2024.04.30.

A major announcement could reportedly be expected next week when Chinese President Xi Jinping visits Budapest. Szabad Európa, citing unnamed sources, reports that the President will spend one day of his two-day visit in Pécs (southwestern Hungary) to announce the construction of a car factory.

Gergely Gulyás, the minister responsible for the Prime Minister’s office, officially announced last Thursday that the Chinese president will visit Hungary between May 8-10. The Minister did not give any details of the program of the visit, but last month, media reports had already circulated that Xi Jinping was planning to announce a major investment during his visit.

According to Szabad Európa, Chinese president Xi Jinping and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán will travel to Pécs

to announce that the major Chinese car manufacturer Great Wall Motor (GWM) will build its first European plant in Bicsérd, near the city.

According to the site, last month, 24.hu reported that a huge area near Pécs had been reclassified as an industrial zone. 24.hu wrote at the time that a giant investment will certainly come here soon, but the speculations at that time were about a battery factory. According to an article by mfor.hu, which has since been deleted, Great Wall Motor would build a car factory and service units on a 600-hectare plot. According to the site, in addition to its mid-range brand Ora, Great Wall Motor will also produce a premium model called Wey. In addition to these two models, the company also produces the brands Haval, Tank, and Poer.
